17 Easy Boho Living Room Ideas on a Budget

A really good bohemian living room has a certain cozy charm, and it comes from things not perfectly coordinating, but still working together beautifully.

A rug from a second-hand store would be under a rattan chair that’s also used, and a warm glow of lights would be over a wall covered in frames of all sorts. The room feels like it has grown up with you, and things were collected over a long time.

I didn’t specifically aim for a boho style. I just wanted a room that felt like my own and didn’t require going into debt doing it. I realized as I went along that bohemian style is particularly good for people who don’t have a lot of money.

It rewards patience instead of demanding perfection, things with lots of texture instead of brand new items, and a space that shows you rather than being overly refined. Almost always, something you get at a thrift store is better than something you buy from a furniture store, not just because of the price, but because of the story and uniqueness it has.

This advice is for anyone who’s been saving pictures of cozy, layered living rooms and wondering if you can only have that warmth without spending a lot of money. Short answer is….yes, you can!

Boho style and decorating on a budget just go together!

Most design styles criticize you for spending less. Minimalism needs to be very precise, and mid-century modern requires the correct items.

However, bohemian style is based on the idea that loveliness comes from collecting things, from a bit of imperfection and from putting old and new together. So nearly all the ways you can decorate cheaply are actually helpful in a boho room.

Shopping at second-hand stores, doing things yourself, using materials from nature or found objects, and using many different inexpensive fabrics aren’t giving up something in a boho room, they are what the room is about.

First, think about the bigger things. Before you worry about macramé, plants, or candles, you should know that boho living rooms have a few key parts which create the mood for everything else.

Choose the right rug, make the lighting warm, and pick a relaxed, natural color scheme for the room to grow from. These important first choices don’t have to cost a lot, but they need to be done thoughtfully.

A forty dollar jute rug from a cheaper store will do more for a boho room than a two hundred dollar decorative item put in a room that isn’t quite ready for it.

Here are some of my favourite boho living room ideas to give you some inspiration!

1. Instant Boho with Pillow Covers

Changing your pillowcases is likely the simplest thing you can do to update a room. You won’t have to buy any new furniture or rearrange anything. Simply swap out the fabric on your pillows.

Choose something that shows a little more of you. Geometric designs, delicate flowers or even something a bit bright will do a lot to change how the room feels.

It’s a minor thing, but people will notice it more than you expect.

Pro tip: Look at second hand stores before anywhere else, and you’ll often find good choices. Or get a few inexpensive ones from the internet to use together. It’s good to have pillows with different feels to the fabric, a smooth one and one with more texture. That pairing looks great.

2. Throw Blankets for a Layered Look

If your sofa looks a little bare, a throw blanket is a super quick solution. Simply drape one over the sofa, and you’re done.

Something with fringe or tassels is good, and it doesn’t have to be perfect; in fact, a slightly relaxed or imperfect look works even better with this style.

Stripes or colors of the earth – browns, greens and so on – will generally blend in easily.

Pro Tip: You don’t have to spend a lot on a throw. Discount shops have decent ones, or you could layer two thinner blankets instead of buying a single heavy one. This will give a fuller appearance and be kinder to your wallet.

3. Macrame Wall Hangings

A macrame hanging is one of those details that immediately makes a room feel boho. A small one for the wall is all you need, not a whole arrangement. Put it above the sofa or in any space that looks a little empty, as it’s more about the texture it provides.

If you’re inclined, you can even make your own macrame – lots of straightforward tutorials are available. Use neutral shades for a more natural look and even quite a simple design will do.

4. Vintage or Rattan Furniture

For something more substantial, consider rattan furniture. A little table, a chair or even a basket are all good options and don’t need to be large.

It will instantly give a natural vibe, particularly if the rest of your room is very neat or simple. Older furniture often looks nicest for this, with more personality.

And to be economical, look at charity shops or garage sales for these finds.

You’ll likely get the best deals and just one little item will be sufficient to transform the room’s appearance.

5. Layered Rugs for Depth

Often people underestimate how much of a difference this makes, but layering rugs is a pretty good idea.

Rather than having just one, put another on top of it. Begin with a fairly plain one, and then add a smaller, more patterned rug over that.

They don’t have to be a perfect match, in fact, it’s much nicer when they aren’t. That combination is what gives a comfortable, easygoing feel.

As a money-saving suggestion, look for inexpensive patterned accent rugs. You don’t have to spend a lot on this; a simple jute rug as a base with a brighter one on top is usually just fine.

Be careful cause rugs can become really expensive if you overdo it. Test cheaper ones and then if you are happy with the result you can make one or two additions of much more quality.

6. Earthy Wall Colors

The colour of your walls is a huge factor in how a room feels. If the room lacks character, the walls are likely the problem.

Warm colours are a pretty quick solution. Consider terracotta, soft greens, or a toned-down yellow. Don’t go for anything too vivid and keep the atmosphere peaceful.

In order to keep costs low, don’t paint the entire room. Painting just one wall will have a similar impact for less money and time. Totally worth it.

7. Gallery Wall with Eclectic Art

A simple gallery wall is a straightforward way to fill an empty wall.

Start to include a few items: photos, prints, perhaps something with texture. It doesn’ and doesn’t require a rigid arrangement.

A slightly irregular layout is, in fact, more attractive. You can rearrange it as you like later. Economically speaking, the frames don’t all have to be the same.

Inexpensive frames will do, and you could even leave some pieces unframed. Second hand shops and downloadable art are usually the simplest and cheapest way to put one of these together.

8. Hanging Plants and Greenery

And this one is fairly obvious, but it does work great for boho living rooms. Add plants. Plants make a room feel much more vibrant.

One or two will even turn a whole room from something basic to something stylish with personality. You can put them on the floor, on a surface, or hang them…any of those do work.

If you’re not keen on looking after them, use artificial plants, but don’t have too many.

Otherwise, choose something low maintenance like succulents.

And look for pots at charity shops, you will often find nicer ones than in standard stores and much more affordably

9. Candles for Soft Lighting

Create a calm, inviting atmosphere with candles.

Varying sizes of pillar candles or tea lights scattered around the room add warmth and soft lighting.

Pro Tip: Thrift stores often have vintage candle holders, and you can find affordable candles in bulk. Go for warm scents like sandalwood or lavender to amplify the Boho vibe.

10. Beaded Curtains or Tapestries

  • Beaded curtains or large wall tapestries add both color and texture to your room. They can function as room dividers or as artistic wall pieces.
  • Budget Tip: Tapestries are a low-cost way to bring color to walls and are often less expensive than large wall art. Look for natural designs or earthy colors to keep the Boho aesthetic.

11. Wood and Woven Accents

  • Incorporating wood elements, such as carved tables or woven baskets, brings in the rustic feel central to Boho. These accents make the room feel grounded and connected to nature.
  • Budget Tip: Thrift stores are a great source for wooden items like trays, baskets, and small tables. Woven baskets can double as storage while adding texture.

12. Accent Chairs with Personality

  • One or two accent chairs in Boho patterns or textures can serve as focal points in your living room. Look for chairs with rattan or wicker details, patterned upholstery, or earthy leather.
  • Budget Tip: Secondhand shops and online marketplaces often have affordable, unique chairs. Add a colorful cushion or throw to up the Boho feel.

13. Textured Wall Art

  • Wall art with texture, like woven or quilted pieces, adds dimension and interest to blank walls. These pieces contribute to the layered, rich look of Boho decor.
  • Budget Tip: DIY projects, like fabric-covered frames or simple woven wall hangings, are cost-effective and personal. Choose natural fibers or earthy hues for a grounded feel.

14. Decorative Trays with Small Accents

  • Decorative trays, adorned with small accents like stones, candles, and tiny plants, make for interesting displays on coffee tables or shelves.
  • Budget Tip: Re-purpose trays you already own, or search for budget-friendly options in home discount stores. Small accents like thrifted crystals or pebbles add a natural touch without much expense.

15. Patterned Curtains

  • Adding patterned or textured curtains brings height and vibrance to a Boho room. Patterns like floral, tribal, or tie-dye work beautifully with the Boho look.
  • Budget Tip: Inexpensive curtains in interesting patterns can often be found at discount retailers. Try natural fabrics or sheer materials to keep the look light and airy.

16. Books and Vintage Decor

  • Stacks of books, combined with vintage trinkets, bring a cozy, collected feel to Boho spaces. Displaying them on shelves or in unique arrangements adds personality.
  • Budget Tip: Thrift stores are excellent for finding vintage decor items and books that add character to your living room.

17. Low Seating with Floor Cushions

  • Low seating, like floor cushions, bean bags, or poufs, embodies the relaxed spirit of Boho. Arrange them around a low coffee table for a comfortable, lounge-style setup.
  • Budget Tip: Opt for secondhand poufs or cushions, or make your own with fabric remnants. Add a few colorful or patterned cushions to round out a cozy Boho seating area.

How I Got The Idea Of Using Boho Elements In My House

I suddenly understood the appeal of bohemian decorating when I saw a camper boho interior on Pinterest. It was a tiny space, decorated so incredibly well I couldn’t even believe it.

A woven fabric here, some plants, and a mix of materials that shouldn’t have gone together… but they did. I came away from that experience wanting to have some of that same vibe in my own house.

Since then I’ve been gradually adding boho touches. I’m not going for a totally bohemian room, because we don’t really do things like that, but I’m using the things that make a room feel less like a display and more like a space a normal person uses.

And this list is about that kind of boho. It’s not the perfect picture you see on Instagram, but a sensible, slow process that is affordable and starts with a good rug, and grows from there.

Before You Go

Looking back, it wasn’t really about the style.

It was more about changing how the space feels when you’re in it.

That camper had a kind of ease to it. Nothing looked forced. And that’s the only thing I tried to carry over.

Some things I added worked, some didn’t stay. That’s part of it.

In the end, the room feels better now. Not because it follows a specific look, but because it feels a bit more like a place you actually want to sit in and stay for a while. These Boho-inspired ideas bring warmth, style, and comfort to any living room without any major investments needed!

Until next time,

Stay safe,
